Since the beginning of August, Nico Bogaard (chief foreman for VIA, a collaboration between Visser & Smit Bouw en Imtech Building Services) and his team have been working 18 meters below ground near Scheldeplein to complete the last 20 meters of tunnel on the North/South line. Nico took us below via a maze of ladders to talk about his work.
Where exactly are you working now?
"The bore tunnel stops at one side of Scheldeplein and on the other side the built tunnel commences at ground level and heads south. These two tunnels have yet to be linked together to allow the metro to pass from North to South. In addition, an emergency exit and some technical areas will be built. In total about 1500 m³ of concrete and approximately 270 tons of reinforcement will be required."
What have we done so far?
"We have constructed an impermeable layer between the bore tunnel and the forthcoming tunnel segments. Additionally, the workfloor of the last tunnel segment has been poured and we are currently busy fixing the reinforcements. The next phase will involve building the tunnel floor, walls and deck."
What would you say is so special about this project?
"After years ofdrilling kilometers of tunnel and casting tunnel segments we can now complete the last 20 meters of tunnel: almost the finishing touch. Once this part of the tunnel is poured, then the North/South connection is complete."
