Backbone Systems Integration

The project

Backbone is the new luggage transport system connecting all the different baggage areas. Schiphol has four baggage areas that have been built over the previous decades. Not only does their technology differ, they are also in some cases very far apart. Backbone creates one integrated baggage system with central control. This allows transfer baggage to be handled much more efficiently.

The following works (total 15 000sqm) have been carried out:

• Construction work for the purpose of upgrading the luggage system
• Forming several large floor recesses and all associated foundation works
• Applying coating to more than 10 000sqm of industrial floors.
• Replacing more than 1000m of sealants in joints between concrete components
• Painting more than 1000sqm of ceilings, columns and walls
• Renovation and construction of various areas including wash-/changing rooms for staff, staff canteen, security office and offices
• Replacement and adjustment of various aluminum façade components
• The construction of various complex fire barrier constructions for the compartmentalisation of the building.
• Partial coordination of subcontractors and users

The works were undertaken in the airside operational area, in a restricted and secure environment amidst one of the most crucial processes in the airport - the baggage system - which also led to shift work patterns being implemented.
