The closure and partial decommissioning of the nuclear power plant in Dodewaard.

The project

The project involved safely containing and managing parts of the nuclear power plant, which were (possibly) radioactively contaminated, for a period of 40 years. A part of the nuclear power station was converted into a 'Safe Containment Zone'.

The safe confinement zone comprised the following buildings:
• reactor hall
• turbine hall
• annex buildings
• ventilation buildings
• waste building

The redundant buildings containing no radioactive substances, were demolished, constructional alterations were made to the existing buildings and new systems were installed After the conversion to 'Safe Containment ' starts the waiting time to allow the radioactivity levels to continue declining. After the allotted time the plant will be dismantled and the site will be free to use for another purpose.

The most important function of the 'Safe Containment ' is to prevent an unacceptable amount of radioactive material being discharged from the zone into the environment by uncontrolled means.

A new security gatehouse and visitors room were also constructed.
