Extension Hogeschool Inholland Rotterdam

Rotterdam

An extension was built next to the existing education building with a total of seventeen storeys (14 655sqm GFA).

The project

The extension included: lecture theatres, semi commercial spaces, an entrance, a lobby for the conference centre, extension of the restaurant, expansion of the library, extension of office spaces and expansion of the parking facilities.

A special feature of this project is that it is built partially over the existing metro line. Also, the daily business within the building could not be disturbed during construction.

There are several types of stairs in the building (in-situ concrete, precast concrete and steel) and lifts. The facade is a curtain wall construction and was completed by a subcontractor due to its highly specialist character.

Sustainability

There were several aspects that fall under the heading ' sustainable building '. This includes both architectural and building-services related aspects. One of them is a heat-and cold storage system, that is also known as a 'seasonal storage'. Seasonal storage is an environmentally friendly and energy-saving alternative to a conventional cooling installation.

Main Contractor

Visser & Smit Bouw as coordinating Main Contractor.
Subcontractors: TGM Technisch Gevelbouw Management / Imtech Building Services en Kuijpers (E&W installaties).
