The Emma Children's Hospital, located on the top floor of the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam, had a drastic transformation.
MedicomZes managed all construction work and coordination of subcontractors and third parties. Total contract area is 11 000sqm. The project was implemented in phases with completion in 2015.
Phase 1: Neonatal Department and Staff
Phase 2: Pediatric Oncology and Pediatric Departments and De Parade (recreation facilities)
Phase 3: Teenagers Department
Phase 4: Pediatric Intensive Care and Pediatric surgery
Phase 5: General facilities
The hospital continued functioning as normal during the works.
The new hospital got a completely new look with all the latest technology. During hospitalisation, very young children should have no adverse effects on their development, even for those in long-term care with serious or chronic illnesses. In the new hospital there is accommodation for parents, meeting places for friends, the latest communication media and even a cinema. A subtle color system distinguishes each department. Artists from all over the world have been asked to submit unique works to the hospital. Even some of the architectural staff were hospitalised for a couple of days, to experience first hand being a patient in 'intensive care' or 'in isolation' (risk of infection cases).
This project is being delivered by MedicomZes (a trading name of Visser & Smit Bouw bv).
