New Intensive and Medium Care Unit

Amsterdam

A new Intensive and Medium Care unit was constructed on the seventh floor of the VU medical centre in Amsterdam. The goal of the renovation was to create more beds for the unit and at the same time meet new technical requirements.

The project

The construction works included:

  • Four Intensive Care Units, with double-, single- and isolation rooms, that can accommodate up to 32 beds.
  • A Medium Care Unit with twelve beds, divided among double and triple rooms and an isolation room.
  • Ancillary areas for staff and visitors, shared between the different units. The Units have been newly decorated with new walls, ceilings, wall and floor finishes, window frames and glazed screens, they are also equipped with the very latest technology.

The new units on the seventh floor were decorated with different colours and materials and have plenty of natural light. The works were performed in an operational environment, where in addition to sound-and dust-proof facilities, transport and logistics issues, flexible working hours were also necessary. We also had to take into account the nearby landing site for the air ambulance. Our knowledge and experience in the field of building methodology, planning, cost expertise and detailing were brought in at an early stage. Due to limited space to relocate patients elsewhere in the hospital, the conversion of the seventh floor was constructed in three phases. Concurrent with this work, the plant room on the tenth floor was expanded. This has created as much space as possible for the patients.
